Biomimetics as a tool for the development of new materials

Posted on January 17, 2017 by line5adminLeave a comment

Living organisms have evolved well-adapted structures and materials over geological time through natural selection. Biomimetics has given rise to new technologies inspired by biological solutions at macro and nanoscales. Humans have looked at nature for answers to problems throughout our existence.

Raw Biofuels Are Transforming Energy Production Around The World

Posted on January 15, 2017 by line5adminLeave a comment

When raw biomass is already in a suitable form (such as firewood), it can burn directly in a stove or furnace to provide heat or raise steam. When raw biomass is in an inconvenient form (such as sawdust, wood chips, grass, urban waste wood, agricultural residues), the typical process is to densify the biomass.

Line 5 is important to Michigan’s energy and economic security. Regional refineries rely on approximately 30 percent of energy shipped on Line 5 for fuels and products to be used in Michigan. More than half the State’s overall propane supply also comes from Line 5, and a large percentage of the energy and petrochemicals produced in refineries in Detroit, Toledo, and Sarnia return to Michigan for use throughout the state’s manufacturing industry.
